So you've realised you're not going to land your dream job in Grimsby. If you're travelling further a field to be interviewed you'll probably need somewhere to stay on the night before the big event. We uncover the best budget and mid-range hotels to lose sleep in.

For an interview in a new city you need to be prepared. Turning up with ten minutes to find the right place and not even the vaguest concept of the locale isn't going to cut it. So, if you're going to do the right thing and get there the day before check out these hotels.

Haringtons Queen Street (01225) 461 728 Located right in the heart of the city centre so there is no excuse for being late. Simple classy hotel that is always snapped up by visitors, so ring to reserve a room before you set off, to avoid disappointment. Prices from £44

Brocks Brock Street (01225) 338 374 Slap bang between the Royal Crescent and the Circus lies the Brocks. It's sophisticated without being stuffy and has all the basic mod cons in your room so you can twiddle away to your hearts content. Reasonable prices make it very appealing indeed. Prices start at £32

Budget

Albany Guesthouse Crescent Gardens (01225) 313 339 Centrally located guesthouse that's simple, chic and you cannot knock the prices either. Prices from £17 - bargain

Bath Backpackers Hostel Pierrepoint Street (01225) 446 787 Cheap accommodation for mainly tourists and travellers, rooms come cheap especially if you share a dorm. Remember the ear plugs though. Prices start at £12

YMCA Broad Street Place (01225) 460 471 Unbeatable location wise as it is right in the centre. If you are really strapped for cash how about this for £11 a night.

There are plenty of options in around the city ranging from the luxurious Burlington Hotel to the altogether more affordable, but still perfectly acceptable Ibis. If that's still over budget it'll mean a bit of travelling out to one of the many B 'n' B such as Chard House.

Mid Priced

The Burlington Hotel 6 Burlington Arcade, 126 New Street (0121) 643 9191 If your feeling really confident you might want to do things in grand style, and this is arguably the most luxurious Hotel in the city centre.

Ibis Ladywell Walk (0121) 622 6010 Single room: £35-55 Centrally located, smart, clean and good value.

Budget

Chard House 289 Mackadown Lane (0121) 785 2145 Single room £25 You can save for yourself a few pounds by travelling out of the city centre to one of the many B 'n' B's such as this one, and you can start the day with a decent breakfast too.

Brighton Backpackers 75-76 Middle Street (01273) 777717 You don't get more bargain-ous than this, although if you want breakfast in the morning you're going to be walking round the corner to Buddies café on the seafront. £12.50pppn

Penny Lanes 11 Charlotte Street (01273) 603197 A mere hop, skip and a jump from the city centre, and the minor-est of dents for your wallet. £20pppn

The Berkley Square 15 Berkley Square, Clifton (0117) 925 4000 Classy little hotel at the top end of Park Street just a few minutes walk from the centre. Clean, chic rooms. During the week prices start at around £58.50 and weekend rates start at £42.50.

Clifton Hotel St Pauls Road, Clifton (0117) 973 4214 Handy B&B near Clifton Village and 5 mins walk to the top of Park Street. Just £42 a night bed and breakfast based on two sharing.

Budget

Bristol City Centre Travel Inn The Haymarket (0117) 9100 600 Excellent value hotel with all basic facilities ideally located in the city centre, handy for that 9am interview. £28 a night week or weekend.

Basca House 19 Broadway Road, Bishopston (0117) 942 2182 If you want basic accommodation this will fit the bill, excellent value at just £22.50 a night for a room. Ideal base point if you are travelling near Cheltenham or Gloucester Road.

Bristol Backpackers 17 Stephen's Street (0117) 925 7900 A city centre location ideal for those who are really counting pennies. Its clean, has a variety of room options (well, dorm options I guess) and is cheap. £12.50 a night. Ring first to book.

YHA - Bristol 14 Narrow Quay (0117) 922 1659 Another cheap but chic place to stay if you are on a tight budget. Situated by the waterfront overlooking the bars and boats (which ever is most appealing to you). A room will roughly cost you £12.50 a night. Ring first to book.

Princes Street East Backpackers West Register Street (0131) 556 6894 Central little hostel offering internet access ideal for picking up last minute info on your prospective employer. They've got no curfew, so beware of drunken Australians stumbling in at 4.30am. £10 (excl. B&B, sharing)

York Pavillion Main Street, Fulford, (01904) 622099 Excellent, albeit quite formal hotel. Good for getting you in the mood for being a high flying exec, until of course you have to take the bus into town. £70

Hudson Hotel 68 Bootham (01904) 621267 Attractive city centre hotel, and has the advantage of being 5 minutes from just about anywhere in town. £55

Budget

Black Bull Hull Road (01904) 411856 The bloke who wrote the James Bond theme lives opposite, and occasionally drinks in the hotel bar. That isn't much compensation for it being draughty, but it is handy for getting a bus into town. £39.50

Youngs Hotel 25 High Petergate (01904) 671001 Cheap and cheerful, and located in a nice part of town. Everything is on your doorstep, so it doesn't matter too much if you oversleep. £35

Bootham Bar Hotel 4 High Petergate (01904) 658516 Very similar to the above, but even cheaper. Woo hoo. £22
